The Impact of Gamified Cultural Heritage Interpretation in Mixed Reality
on Spatial Cognition
About the Project
Together with the advancing gaming technologies, the proposed study will present content of cultural heritage interpretation enriched with AR technology, carrying gamification elements within the context of a historical place, serving a different purpose from similar applications.
The research does not merely propose developing an application, but is concerned with topics such as the user’s spatial cognition, processes of spatial knowledge acquisition, and the quality of information, while also examining interface technologies during the gaming experience, enhancing heritage awareness, environmental learning, production of environmental knowledge, and processes of cultural heritage interpretation. In particular, this medium, which compares wearable and portable AR technology containing tactile embedded interaction, aiming to understand the differences and similarities, focuses on the user’s spatial cognition, the representational knowledge of heritage sites, and the quality of this information. Therefore, it will differentiate from previous studies and contribute uniquely to the field due to its broad research focus.
Furthermore, in this research, although heritage information specific to a particular location is used in the application to be developed, the use of gamification principles and the heritage interpretation data set will make it possible to create a design template / toolkit / library in terms of interface design. This toolkit, the interaction system, can be applied to other heritage areas, and the application’s potential to increase heritage awareness, incite a desire to learn about heritage, enhance public interest in cultural heritage conservation efforts, and other elements, suggest the potential for it to become a useful product.
